When WhatsApp Really Tells Us “What’s Up”
This morning taught me a simple yet profound lesson about how we live with technology.
It had been raining heavily, nonstop, since last night. As usual, I didn’t bother to check my phone or scroll through WhatsApp in the morning—I’ve never been the type to start my day with notifications. I got ready, prepared for work, and set out, unaware of what awaited me.
On reaching, I was surprised to see the doors were closed. Only then did I open WhatsApp. And there it was—a clear message: Today is a holiday due to heavy rains. I couldn’t help but smile at the irony. The answer had been sitting right there in my pocket, but I didn’t look.
That’s when it struck me: sometimes, WhatsApp quite literally tells us “what’s up.” It’s no longer just an app for casual conversations, forwards, or group chats—it has silently become a space where life’s small but important updates live. A modern-day noticeboard that can change your day, save you a trip, or even save you from the rain.
Of course, the incident also reminded me that while WhatsApp is a tool, it’s we who decide how to use it. Too much dependency, and we risk drowning in endless notifications. Too little, and we might miss what matters. Balance, as always, is the key.
Today, I realized that a single unopened notification can mean the difference between rushing in the rain for nothing, or sipping a warm cup of tea at home. Sometimes, technology truly lives up to its name—WhatsApp does tell us “what’s up.”
