A few days ago, I was in conversation with a friend while discussing the upcoming election. During our discussion,
I shared my concern that politics today has increasingly become about pulling down others, whether parties, candidates, or governments, rather than meaningfully speaking about the progress and welfare of the nation and its people. This reflection prompted me to share my thoughts publicly as a responsible citizen and educationist.
India is a Democratic, Socialist, and Secular nation, as enshrined in its Constitution.
As a Democracy, the people hold the sovereign power to choose their representatives and participate in governance.
As a Socialist State, India is committed to promoting social and economic justice by reducing inequality and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.
As a Secular nation, the State maintains equal respect for all religions, neither favouring nor discriminating against any faith, thereby upholding unity in diversity.
Whichever party comes to power, it is essential that the Constitution of India remains supreme, and governance is carried out for the welfare of all citizens, irrespective of background, colour, caste, creed, religion, language, or region.
Unfortunately, many elected representatives fail to uphold this responsibility.
They are chosen for selfless public service, yet often become absorbed in self-centred interests rather than people-centred governance.
What should an ideal elected representative be like?
An ideal representative should:
* Respect and protect the Constitution and democratic values
*Work for inclusive development, leaving no section of society behind
*Prioritise education, health, employment, safety, and justice
*Listen to the people, not merely speak to them during elections
*Act with integrity, accountability, and humility
*Remember that power is a responsibility, not a privilege
What should elected candidates think and act upon?
They should always ask:
*Is this decision good for the common citizen?
*Does this strengthen democracy and national unity?
*Am I serving the nation or myself?
True leadership is measured not by slogans, but by service, sacrifice, and sincerity.
Choose leaders who serve the Constitution, not themselves.
