Credit Card: A Dearest Friend or a Dangerous Companion?
Let’s talk about credit card today, perhaps it may help someone reading, if don’t know about it. A few days ago, I was talking with one of my friends, and during the conversation I shared about credit cards. It was in 2015 that I heard the term credit card for the first time. Having developed a curiosity to know more, I did a small Google journey. What started as a simple search slowly gave me a clearer understanding of how this small card carries both convenience and responsibility.
At first, it felt impressive. A simple card that allows you to buy without immediate payment. But as I began to understand it better, I realized that a credit card is not just a financial facility. It is a test of discipline & responsibility.
Then all of a sudden, a thought came into my mind:
“Credit card is like the dearest dude in need,
The deadliest foe indeed.”
A Very Brief History
The concept of credit has existed for a long time, even before cards came into existence. Merchants once maintained handwritten ledgers for trusted customers. Later, systems like charge plates were introduced.(1)
The modern credit card journey began in 1950 with Diners Club, which allowed payments across multiple merchants.(2) Soon after, Bank of America introduced bank-issued cards, which later evolved into global networks like Visa and Mastercard.(3)
Today, the same concept has moved into digital wallets and contactless payments, making transactions faster and easier than ever.

So it remains true:
A dearest dude in need,
The deadliest foe indeed.
